Continuing your story…

Who are we?

Hannah and Kerri share a deep passion for historic textiles.

Their fascination with historical trends and their impact on clothing and design naturally led them both to careers in theatre costume, ballet, and the broader world of textiles.

Their paths first crossed at The Rug & Carpet Studio in Long Melford, Suffolk. During her 8 years there, Hannah became a highly regarded and essential member of the restoration team. Coupled with Kerri’s 20 years, advancing from a valued member of the conservation team to a management role, they are set up for success!

Now, they are embarking on a new venture; their own business with a new studio in the historic Suffolk weaving town of Lavenham.

Join them on this exciting journey as they revive and conserve your beautiful rugs and textiles, one thread at a time.

We are Heritage Thread.

Hannah & Kerri

What do we do?

With almost three decades of combined experience in the trade, Hannah and Kerri now offer the following services:

  • We provide remedial treatment and preventive advice to clients from historic properties, museums, and private collections. Working closely with accredited conservators, we offer a broad range of treatment options for both antique and contemporary carpets. We cater to both functional rugs and those on display, with services ranging from robust repairs to supportive treatments and preventive care. Our documentation includes survey assessments, condition and treatment reports, as well as preventive and aftercare advice tailored to each item.

  • We offer expert restoration services for handmade Oriental and European rugs and carpets, from minor repairs like stabilising damage and rebinding worn side cords to extensive reweaving of large holes. Our aim is always for ensuring minimal intervention and preserving as much of the original textile as possible. Each rug is assessed for its condition, value, and future wear, with all work carried out by hand. We provide advice on underlay and aftercare, and offer on-site assessments, courier services, and preliminary estimates based on photos for our international clients.

  • We provide expert advice, including preliminary estimates from photos, and comprehensive services such as condition reports, treatment proposals, and post-treatment appraisals. Our on-site consultations cover history, condition, and treatment options, even offering outsourced professional photography for conservation documentation. We also offer emergency response following fire or flood, with in-depth research on historical and cultural significance. Services include on-site assessments for immovable carpets, and guidance on conservation, along with educational lectures and study days. We also work closely with Sarah Tatum at The Rug & Carpet Studio. She is an expert in her field, and gives experienced advice on tailor made replacements when your dearest carpets are beyond repair.

  • We provide comprehensive cleaning for rugs and carpets, including dust extraction, surface wet cleaning, and delicate treatments for fragile textiles. We tailor our services to each rug’s condition, offering stain removal, mould treatment, and specialist cleaning for smoke, fire, and flood damage. On-site cleaning is available for delicate carpets. We also advise on routine cleaning, aftercare, and natural insect eradication methods for common pests like clothes moths and carpet beetles.
